Our Source
Farming Methods
Our source farmers employ sustainable farming practices that are designed to improve both the quality of their coffee and the livelihoods of their members. These methods include:
1. Organic Farming: Farmers within the cooperative practice organic farming techniques, avoiding synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Instead, they utilise natural compost and organic pest control methods.
2. Agroforestry: The integration of coffee plants with other crops and trees helps maintain biodiversity and soil health. This method not only supports ecological balance but also provides shade for coffee plants, which can improve bean quality.
3. Post-Harvest Processing: The cooperative emphasises proper post-harvest processing techniques, including careful washing and drying of coffee cherries to ensure that only high-quality beans are produced. This attention to detail is crucial for maintaining flavour integrity.
4. Training and Education: Members receive training on best agricultural practices, pest management, and sustainable farming techniques through workshops organised by the cooperative.

Location and Altitude
Our source cooperative is located in the Elgon region of Uganda, it is situated in the eastern part of the country and part of the Mbale district. Being adjacent to the Mount Elgon National Park this region is characterised by its mountainous terrain, with altitudes ranging from approximately 1,200 to 2,800 meters above sea level. The high altitude is significant for coffee cultivation as it contributes to slower cherry maturation, which enhances the flavour profile of our coffee beans.
Quality and Taste of Coffee
The coffee produced by our source Cooperative is known for its distinct flavour profile, often described as having bright acidity with fruity notes and a medium body. The unique taste attributes can be attributed to several factors:
• Terroir: The combination of high altitude, rich volcanic soils, and favourable climate conditions contribute significantly to the flavour characteristics of their coffee.
• Varietals: The cooperative grows Arabica coffee varieties that are well-suited for high-altitude cultivation. These varietals tend to have more complex flavours compared to lower-altitude grown coffees.
• Processing Techniques: Meticulous post-harvest processing plays a vital role in enhancing flavour profiles by ensuring that only ripe cherries are selected and properly processed.
